Hospital Treatment Costs: Patients and their families are often concerned about the total cost of treatment while undergoing medical care in hospitals. Frequently, the final bill exceeds expectations due to the accumulation of separate charges for tests, bed rentals, and other medical services. To address this issue, the Central Government has issued directives requiring hospitals to clearly display their service rates. The objective is to inform patients about treatment costs in advance and enhance transparency in billing.
The Union Health Ministry has instructed all states and Union Territories to display the rate lists for services available in hospitals and clinics in locations where patients and their families can easily view them.
Patients to Receive Advance Information on Treatment Costs
Estimating expenses before hospital admission or treatment can often be difficult for patients. A lack of clear information regarding charges for tests, beds, and other medical services can lead to financial difficulties.
This initiative by the Central Government will help patients know the rates for various services beforehand, enabling them to make treatment-related decisions based on their budgets. It may also help reduce disputes between patients and hospital management regarding bills.
Rate Lists Must Be Displayed in Local Languages Alongside English
Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava has written to the Chief Secretaries of all states, urging them to ensure strict compliance with these directives.
According to the guidelines, the list of service rates must be displayed prominently in hospitals so that patients and their families can view it without difficulty. The rate list must be made available in the local language of the region alongside English, ensuring that the general public can easily understand the service charges.
In states where the Clinical Establishments Act is in force, adherence to the prescribed provisions regarding this matter is mandatory. Meanwhile, other states and Union Territories have also been instructed to ensure such arrangements are in place in accordance with their own applicable regulations. Mandatory Display of Package Rates for Foreign Patients
Emphasis has been placed on fee transparency for foreign patients visiting India for treatment under Medical and AYUSH visas. Hospitals are required to clearly display the package rates prescribed for international patients.
This measure will help patients from abroad understand the estimated cost of treatment. Additionally, it could prove useful in reducing confusion regarding the pricing of medical services and boosting confidence in India’s medical tourism sector.
Focus on Enhancing Transparency in Hospitals
The primary objective of this central government initiative is to provide patients with clear information regarding treatment costs. Publicly displaying rate lists will enable patients to understand the charges for various services and plan their expenses more effectively.
It will now be the responsibility of officials in states and union territories to monitor compliance with these directives in hospitals and clinics within their jurisdictions. This move is expected to help mitigate issues related to hidden charges during treatment and safeguard the interests of patients.
