Results from the U.S. midterm elections have begun to emerge, with leaders of Indian origin delivering impressive performances and securing victories. Pia Dandiya, Suhas Subramanyam, and Aruna Miller have achieved success in their respective electoral districts, further strengthening the presence of Indian-Americans in U.S. politics.
Pia Dandiya secures victory in Florida
Pia Dandiya, a Democratic leader of Indian origin, has won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida. She defeated her Republican opponent, Casey Askar, a former Marine. According to the results announced on Tuesday, Pia Dandiya received 51.9 percent of the vote, while her opponent garnered 49.1 percent.
With this win, Pia has become a new Indian-American member of the U.S. Congress. Her parents immigrated to the United States from India. Before entering politics, Pia served as a high school principal. She also founded a high school with the goal of providing better education to students from low-income families and helping them achieve financial self-sufficiency.
Suhas Subramanyam wins again
Suhas Subramanyam, a Democratic leader of Indian origin, has also won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia. He has been elected to the U.S. Congress for a second consecutive term. The 40-year-old secured his victory in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District.
He received over 61.5 percent of the vote, while his Republican opponent, Dave Beckwith, received 36.4 percent. Suhas previously served as an advisor to President Barack Obama. He is of Indian descent, and he also played a significant role in organizing volunteers for the reconstruction of communities affected by Hurricane Katrina. Aruna Miller Re-elected as Lieutenant Governor of Maryland
Indian-American leader Aruna Miller has emerged victorious in the election. Representing the Democratic Party, Aruna Miller has been re-elected as the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. She ran alongside Governor Wes Moore and defeated the Republican candidate, Rob Krop.
This victory secures another term for Aruna Miller within the state’s executive administration. Her success also ensures the continued representation of individuals of Indian origin in American state-level leadership.
It is worth noting that Aruna Miller was born in Hyderabad, India. Prior to the election, she had urged American citizens—particularly those from immigrant communities—to participate in the voting process and to hold the Trump-Vance administration accountable.
Midterm Elections Seen as Crucial for the Trump Administration
In the United States, midterm elections are held midway through a president’s term. The results of these elections can influence the standing of political parties within the U.S. Congress and shape policies for the remainder of the president’s term. For this reason, these elections are also being viewed as a significant political test for President Donald Trump.
