IND vs NZ 1st ODI: The five-match ODI series between India and New Zealand has begun. In the first match, being played at Eden Park in Auckland, Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first—a decision that the Indian bowlers soon justified. Meanwhile, former captain Rohit Sharma showcased some brilliant fielding that left everyone amazed.
Even at the age of 39, Rohit’s agility was remarkable. He pulled off a spectacular dive to collect the ball and then executed a precise throw to run out experienced New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell. Notably, this was the first time in Mitchell’s ODI career that he had been dismissed via a run-out.
Rohit Sharma’s brilliant dive and precise throw
The incident occurred on the first ball of the 22nd over of the New Zealand innings. Indian spinner Axar Patel was bowling when Glenn Phillips played a soft shot toward the leg side, attempting to take a single.
Daryl Mitchell, at the non-striker’s end, appeared hesitant at first but eventually set off for the run. Rohit Sharma, stationed at mid-wicket, charged toward the ball and gathered it while diving. While still in the air, he unleashed a superb throw toward wicketkeeper KL Rahul.
KL Rahul wasted no time in hitting the stumps. The decision was referred to the third umpire, and replays clearly showed that Mitchell was out of his crease. Had there been even the slightest delay in Rohit’s throw or the wicketkeeper’s reaction, Mitchell might have made it back to safety. Instead, Rohit’s exceptional fielding dealt a major blow to New Zealand.
Daryl Mitchell misses out on a fifty against India
Daryl Mitchell has historically maintained an impressive record against the Indian team in ODI cricket. This was only the second time in his last nine innings that he failed to score 50 or more runs. During that stretch, he had recorded four centuries and two half-centuries.
Given this, his early dismissal in the first ODI proved to be a major relief for the Indian team. New Zealand lost their fifth wicket with the score at 97. Meanwhile, a video of this brilliant piece of fielding by Rohit Sharma became a major talking point among cricket fans.
