Frequent fevers could be a warning sign! Pay attention to these symptoms of blood cancer in children.

New Delhi: Childhood is typically filled with joy and energy, but when a serious health issue arises, it naturally causes great concern for parents. Blood cancer—or leukemia—in children is one such serious condition. Its early symptoms can often resemble those of a common fever or a seasonal infection, making it difficult to identify. It is, therefore, essential for parents to pay close attention to any unusual changes in their child’s health.

The causes of cancer can differ between children and adults.

In adults, cancer is often linked to factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, or lifestyle habits. In children, however, blood cancer is usually caused by changes (mutations) in the DNA of the body’s cells. In some cases, genetic factors may also play a role. Consequently, parents should not blame themselves for the occurrence of this disease.

How does blood cancer develop in children?

Leukemia is one of the most common types of cancer in children. It originates in the bone marrow, where the body produces blood cells. In this condition, abnormal white blood cells begin to multiply uncontrollably. This can interfere with the production of healthy blood cells and weaken the body’s ability to fight off infections and diseases.

Pay attention to these symptoms in children.

The early signs of blood cancer can mimic those of common, less serious illnesses. However, if certain symptoms persist for a long time or keep recurring, they should not be ignored.

Frequent or prolonged fever: A fever that persists for an extended period or keeps returning after subsiding.

Bone and joint pain: Persistent pain in the limbs or bones, or visible swelling in the joints.

Lumps in the neck or armpits: The enlargement of lymph nodes or the appearance of lumps in specific parts of the body. Abdominal swelling: An unusual distension of the abdomen or a feeling of heaviness.

Weakness and fatigue: The child may tire easily, show less interest in playing, or appear more lethargic than usual.

Paleness of the face: The skin may appear pale due to a lack of blood (anemia) in the body.

What should you do if these symptoms appear?

It is important to note that fever, weakness, body aches, and the presence of lumps can also occur in many common illnesses. A diagnosis of blood cancer cannot be confirmed based solely on these symptoms. However, if these symptoms persist for a long time, recur frequently, or if there is a continuous decline in the child’s health, medical evaluation should not be delayed.

Timely examination and an accurate diagnosis help in identifying the disease and initiating appropriate treatment. Effective treatment is available for many types of blood cancer in children. Therefore, it is crucial to recognize early warning signs, not ignore symptoms, and take appropriate action in a timely manner.
