IAS Success Story: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination is considered one of the toughest exams in the country. While lakhs of aspirants appear for it annually, only a few achieve their goal. Some succeed in their very first attempt, whereas others reach their destination after facing repeated setbacks. One such inspiring story is that of C. Vanmathi from Tamil Nadu; despite financial hardships and pressure to get married, she persisted with her studies and, after several unsuccessful attempts, secured All India Rank 152 in the 2015 UPSC exam.
A Childhood Marked by Financial Hardship
C. Vanmathi was born in Sathyamangalam, in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu. Her father was a taxi driver, and the family faced significant financial challenges. From a young age, Vanmathi balanced her studies with sharing the family’s responsibilities.
After returning from school, she would take the family’s buffaloes out to graze. She also helped with household chores and contributed to managing the family’s finances. Despite limited resources, she never abandoned her education.
Choosing Education Over Marriage
After completing her initial education, Vanmathi faced pressure to get married. However, she decided to pursue further studies and focus on her career. Her family supported her in this decision.
She went on to complete her post-graduation in Computer Applications. During this time, the dream of joining the administrative services began to take firm root in her mind.
Inspired by a TV Serial to Become an IAS Officer
Vanmathi drew inspiration to become an IAS officer from a television serial. She used to watch a show titled ‘Ganga Yamuna Saraswati,’ which featured a lead character who was an IAS officer. This character deeply influenced her and sparked a desire to join the civil services.
She set the administrative service as her goal and began preparing for the UPSC exam.
Facing Repeated Setbacks in UPSC
The journey to becoming an IAS officer was not easy for Vanmathi. She also took up a job to meet her financial needs. After clearing the banking recruitment exam, she secured a job as an Assistant Manager at Indian Overseas Bank.
She continued her UPSC preparations alongside her job. Her first attempt took her to the interview stage, though she was not ultimately selected. She faced setbacks in subsequent attempts as well; however, she did not abandon her goal and persisted with her preparation.
Secured AIR 152 in 2015
After repeated setbacks, Vanamati’s hard work finally paid off. In 2015, she secured All India Rank (AIR) 152 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination and was selected for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). She was subsequently allotted the Maharashtra cadre.
Served in Various Administrative Roles
After becoming an IAS officer, Vanamati handled various administrative responsibilities in several locations across Maharashtra, including Nandurbar, Dhule, Mumbai, and Wardha. During her tenure, she worked in sectors such as tribal welfare, rural development, education, health, water conservation, and digital governance.
Currently Serving as District Collector of Wardha
Vanamati is currently serving as the District Collector of Wardha. Her work has emphasized water conservation, the promotion of MSMEs, and the use of digital systems to monitor government schemes.
From spending her childhood with limited resources to achieving an All India Rank in the UPSC exam and becoming a District Collector, Vanamati’s journey serves as an inspiration for aspirants who continue to strive for their goals despite facing setbacks.
