Independence Day 2026: Security arrangements in the national capital, Delhi, have been bolstered to an unprecedented level for the Independence Day celebrations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15. In view of this, the Delhi Police and security agencies have put in place comprehensive security measures across the capital, particularly in and around the Red Fort. According to officials, approximately 20,000 security personnel have been deployed in Delhi for the occasion. A multi-layered surveillance network has been established to ensure continuous monitoring of sensitive areas.
Officials stated that various units of the Delhi Police, paramilitary forces, commando squads, and special teams from the National Security Guard (NSG) have been deployed at the Red Fort and surrounding sensitive zones. Trained snipers and specialized ‘hit teams’ will also be stationed at strategic locations to counter any potential threats. To technologically strengthen the security apparatus, around 1,000 CCTV cameras have been installed. These cameras are linked to an integrated surveillance system, enabling real-time monitoring of all activities. Additionally, Facial Recognition Systems (FRS) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems have been activated to facilitate the immediate identification of suspicious individuals and vehicles.
Deployment of NSG, Snipers, and NDRF Special Teams
According to DCP (North) Raja Banthia, various units of the Delhi Police are involved in the security arrangements. These include the Traffic Unit, North District police teams, local police station personnel, PCR units, the Special Branch, the Special Cell, and other security staff. All units have been instructed to work in a coordinated manner to ensure immediate action against any suspicious activity. He added that, alongside the Delhi Police, multiple companies of paramilitary forces, commando squads, and special teams from the National Security Guard (NSG) would also form part of the security setup. Snipers and special ‘hit teams’ will be deployed at sensitive locations, remaining ready to tackle any potential threat immediately. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams will also be stationed to handle emergency situations. Additionally, Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) will be positioned at strategically important locations to ensure an immediate response to any incident. Security arrangements have also been technologically bolstered; around 1,000 CCTV cameras, Facial Recognition Systems (FRS), and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems have been activated at the Red Fort and its vicinity. These systems will facilitate real-time monitoring of people and vehicles.
Monitoring Every Movement via 1,000 Cameras
Security arrangements at the Red Fort and surrounding areas for the Independence Day celebrations have been significantly strengthened through technology. He mentioned that a state-of-the-art control room has been set up to monitor the live feeds from these cameras. Trained and experienced police personnel are on continuous duty there, keeping a sharp eye on every movement. Information can be instantly relayed to the relevant teams upon detecting any suspicious activity or receiving security-related inputs. According to Raja Banthia, special arrangements have been made to integrate technical surveillance with ground operations. Dedicated strategic response points have been established for police and security forces deployed on the ground, allowing teams to take immediate action when necessary. DCP (North) Raja Banthia stated that video analytics-based systems have been installed at various locations, keeping security requirements in mind. These include Facial Recognition Systems (FRS), Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), and intrusion detection systems. These technologies will enable the immediate identification of suspicious individuals, vehicles, and any unauthorized activity in restricted areas. He mentioned that some police personnel have been equipped with body-worn cameras to further strengthen security arrangements. These cameras will facilitate live recording and monitoring of ground-level activities, aiding in a swift response to any incident.
In view of potential threats from drones, anti-drone systems have also been deployed around the Red Fort. These systems are capable of identifying and neutralizing any suspicious or unauthorized drones. Security agencies are maintaining constant surveillance of the airspace. Additionally, activities and conversations on social media platforms are being monitored. Security agencies are keeping a close watch on any misleading information, rumors, or suspicious online activity so that necessary measures can be taken in a timely manner.
