Bastar Regiment: A major initiative has been launched to gain national recognition for the valor and military prowess of the youth of Bastar. State Home Minister Vijay Sharma has written to the Central Government, formally requesting the formation of a ‘Bastar Regiment’ within the Indian Army. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has adopted a positive stance on the proposal, indicating that the matter is under consideration.
DRG Bastar Battalion: The Most Suitable Candidates for a Special Regiment
This assurance has significantly strengthened a long-standing demand from the region. In his letter, Home Minister Vijay Sharma highlighted the indomitable courage of Bastar’s youth. He noted that local youths are working shoulder-to-shoulder with security forces in some of the country’s most inaccessible and Naxal-affected areas. Their innate proficiency in jungle warfare and guerrilla tactics makes them ideal candidates for a specialized Indian Army regiment.
The Example of DRG and Bastar Battalion
The proposal draws heavily on the significant successes achieved by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Bastar Battalion. Comprising local youth, these units have successfully executed numerous major and decisive operations against Naxals. Bastar’s history has always been defined by struggle and patriotic valor. During the freedom movement, seven of the eleven major battles fought against the British in Chhattisgarh took place on Bastar’s soil. Even today, the region’s youth are serving in military units such as the Rajput, Garhwal, and Dogra regiments, in addition to participating in the ‘Agniveer’ scheme.
Approval Would Create History
If the Central Government greenlights the formation of the ‘Bastar Regiment,’ it will be the first special army regiment named after a tribal-dominated region in Central India. This move would not only open new avenues for employment and honor for local youth but also bring national recognition to Bastar’s heroic legacy.
