Delhi School Bomb Threat: More than 250 schools in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) received fake threats on Wednesday. A new revelation has come to light in this case. The country domain (.ru) of the email ID used to send fake threats was also used for a similar email sent to a private school in the city last year.

Officials involved in the investigation said the suspect may have used a virtual private network (VPN) to hide his identity, Hindustan Times reported. They stressed that tracking people in such circumstances can be difficult. Delhi Police officials also said they suspected a “deep conspiracy” and have registered a case of criminal conspiracy, anonymous communication and other charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
What did the officials reveal?
Officials said that of course, such email ID addresses can be created by anyone, from any location. An official involved in the investigation said that the threat was sent from a Russia-based domain ID ‘savariim@mail.ru’, but the user may have hidden his IP (Internet Protocol) address. The official further said that ‘There is a possibility that the IP addresses may be connected to VPN and establishing the person’s connectivity will be a challenge. We will seek help by sending a demi official (DO) letter to Interpol, asking for details of the person who signed up for the email address.’
It is known that Mail.ru is an email service provided by the Russian company VK, just like Gmail or Outlook are email services provided by Google and Microsoft respectively. In this case, .ru is the country code top-level domain for Russian websites, just like .in is for India. The .ru country code was also used to send fake threats to The Indian School in Sadiq Nagar, South Delhi on April 12 last year.
What could happen next?
To find out where the fake email came from, Indian law enforcement agencies will have to contact the Russian company for details about the sender’s account. The level of cooperation the company provides will depend on India’s bilateral treaties with Russia regarding the exchange of information to solve crime and how much information the company stores about its users and their email accounts. VPNs allow users to hide their IP address online.
