Para-athlete Neeraj Yadav, a three-time Asian Games gold medalist, has passed away; news of his suicide has caused a stir.

Sad news has emerged from the world of Indian para-athletics. Neeraj Yadav, an experienced Indian para-athlete who won three gold medals at the Asian Para Games, has passed away at the age of 42. According to initial reports, his death is suspected to be a case of suicide. The news has sent a wave of shock through the sports community. However, the circumstances surrounding his death and the reasons behind it have yet to be officially confirmed.

Post-mortem at a Delhi hospital

S. Satyanarayana, the head coach of the Indian para-athletics team, confirmed the passing of Neeraj Yadav. Media reports suggest that Neeraj allegedly consumed a poisonous substance at his home. A post-mortem examination was conducted on his body at a hospital in Delhi on October 28.

Expressing his grief, coach S. Satyanarayana described the incident as deeply unfortunate. He stated that he was unaware of the exact reasons behind Neeraj’s actions. He also advised other athletes to face the challenges and ups and downs of their careers with patience.

According to a PTI report, further details and the specific circumstances surrounding the incident are still awaited. It is reported that Neeraj was unable to participate in the Asian Para Games held this month due to a doping-related ban. However, there has been no official confirmation of any direct link between this ban and his death.

Won three gold medals at the Asian Para Games

Neeraj Yadav was one of India’s seasoned para-athletes. He brought pride to the nation through his outstanding performances on the international stage. In 2018, at the Asian Para Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia, he won a gold medal in the javelin throw event.

Subsequently, at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, Neeraj secured gold medals in both the javelin throw and discus throw events. In total, he had earned three gold medals at the Asian Para Games. Neeraj Yadav competed in the F55 category. In this category, athletes participate in various field events—such as the javelin throw, discus throw, and shot put—while seated. His passing has cast a pall of gloom over the Indian para-sports community.
