Google Cloud services hit by disruptions after fire at Delhi data centre

Several Google Cloud services experienced network disruptions in India after a fire broke out at a third-party data centre facility in Delhi, triggering an emergency shutdown of networking equipment, according to reports.

The incident led to reduced network capacity at a local Point of Presence (POP) in Delhi, resulting in intermittent connectivity issues and elevated latency for users across multiple regions, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai.

Google Cloud confirmed that traffic from affected areas was rerouted to alternate facilities to minimise service disruption. However, users may still experience slower performance, delays in data transfer, and occasional connectivity issues.

The disruption was caused after the fire prompted safety systems to shut down critical networking infrastructure at the third-party facility hosting parts of Google’s network operations in the capital.

According to updates, the impact has not resulted in a complete outage, but rather a partial service degradation affecting selected cloud operations and services relying on regional routing through Delhi infrastructure. The incident highlights the vulnerability of large-scale digital infrastructure to physical disruptions at data centre facilities, especially in densely interconnected cloud networks that support enterprise applications, AI systems, and internet services.

Google Cloud said it is actively working on traffic rerouting and mitigation measures to restore full performance and reduce latency across affected regions. Further details on the cause of the fire and extent of infrastructure damage are yet to be officially disclosed.
