Weather Update: According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Southwest Monsoon will remain active across many parts of India on Wednesday, August 12, with heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast for several states. The heaviest rainfall is expected in East Rajasthan, where extremely heavy rain may occur in isolated places. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also predicted for parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, West Uttar Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Odisha. The weather department issued this forecast following widespread rainfall across several regions over the past 24 hours, including heavy downpours in East Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh.
Rainfall spell to continue until August 15
The monsoon will remain active across North and Central India—including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh—until August 15. A heavy rainfall alert has also been issued for hilly states up to August 17. According to the weather department, the spell of rain is expected to continue for the next week.

Heavy rainfall is likely in East Rajasthan.
Heavy rain may also occur in isolated areas of Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, West Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, and parts of the Northeast.
Rainfall is likely to continue in the Delhi-NCR region.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted for parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

What is the reason for the heavy rainfall?
The rainfall experienced over the past few days is being driven by a low-pressure area formed over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining regions. Currently, the monsoon trough (an elongated low-pressure zone that helps organize monsoon rainfall) extends from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and parts of West Bengal all the way to the Bay of Bengal. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert.
It has also stated that another low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal around August 12. This could help sustain rainfall in parts of East and Central India in the coming days. The department forecasts significant rainfall across several regions in the coming week, including the Western Himalayas, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Konkan-Goa.
Rainfall is also expected in South India. Heavy rain is likely in coastal Karnataka and Kerala, while scattered rainfall and thunderstorms are anticipated in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. This spell of rain is not expected to end anytime soon.
