Bangladesh Coup: Father of Microfinance, Nobel Winner Mohammad Yunus Named Interim PM After Sheikh Hasina’s Fall!

Bangladesh Coup: After the fall of Sheikh Hasina government and the dissolution of Bangladesh Parliament, Professor Mohammad Yunus has got the post of Prime Minister in the interim government. He can take charge on Thursday.

Bangladesh Coup: Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina government has collapsed. Sheikh Hasina has left the country. Now the command of Bangladesh is going to come in the hands of a professor who won the Nobel Prize by working for the poor. Professor Mohammad Yunus, who faced charges of embezzlement in the Sheikh Hasina government, has been chosen as the leader of the interim government. President Mohammed Shahabuddin has dissolved the Parliament on Tuesday and handed over the responsibility to Mohammad Yunus. 

Microfinance through Grameen Bank changed people’s lives

Mohammad Yunus, known as the father of microfinance, may come to Bangladesh from Paris on Thursday and take charge. He worked as a professor in many universities. After this, he implemented economic reforms in the lives of many people using microfinance through Grameen Bank. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for making women economically strong. After the recent crisis started in Bangladesh, he had said that Sheikh Hasina has broken the dreams of Bangabandhu Mujibur Rahman. Bangladesh is now independent.  

People protesting against the government had made the demand  

People protesting against the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh had demanded that 84-year-old Mohammad Yunus be made the head of the interim government. The Sheikh Hasina government had removed Mohammad Yunus from the post of MD in 2011, accusing him of irregularities in Grameen Bank. Earlier in 2007, he had described Bangladeshi politicians as only money-hungry. He was also jailed for 6 months for violating labor law. A Dhaka court had found him and 13 others guilty of embezzling $2 million from Grameen Telecom. Grameen Telecom was also a shareholder in Grameenphone, a subsidiary of Norwegian telecom company Telenor. 

Muhammad Yunus helped reduce poverty in Bangladesh

The success of Grameen Bank opened the way for similar projects in the Philippines, Indonesia and Pakistan. Muhammad Yunus helped reduce poverty in Bangladesh. He was born in Chittagong in 1940. He then studied economics from Dhaka University and Vanderbilt University in the US. After this, he started working at Chittagong University.
