Iran-US Conflict: US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he is launching a major new campaign targeting Iran’s economy. He warned that any country assisting or trading with the Islamic nation would face “very severe” penalties. Writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said, “No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran as many opportunities to make a deal as I have. Sadly, they failed to seize this opportunity. Therefore, today I am announcing the most sweeping economic action ever taken against any country! This will be economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale.”
Iran is finished
Trump continued, “Their navy is decimated, their air force is ruined, their military factories are reduced to rubble, their currency is worthless, and their country is on the brink of collapse. Today, I am also announcing that any nation allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any form of aid to Iran will itself face dire economic consequences.”
Trump seeks support from allies
“Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies—all of this must stop immediately. You know who you are. This will be an ‘Economic D-Day,’ and we need the support of all our allies to isolate and defeat the threat posed by Iran. These fanatics are on the verge of defeat, and these historic measures will cripple them and their capacity to spread terror globally. Iran will never possess nuclear weapons. Thank you for your attention to this matter.” Trump Faces Domestic Criticism
Trump has launched this campaign to increase economic pressure just as the conflict nears the six-month mark, with no diplomatic or military solution currently in sight. With the November elections approaching, Trump is once again facing domestic political criticism regarding the war.
President Trump’s remarks follow, by about a week, a statement from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said the US would isolate Iran economically in a way the world has never seen before. Despite a recent lull in missile attacks, Iran has effectively blocked shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This situation arose after an initial agreement between the US and Iran to reopen this vital waterway collapsed.
In recent days, both sides have indicated that messages were being exchanged; however, on Tuesday, Trump insisted that talks had ceased and suggested in a social media post that the Strait of Hormuz could become new US territory.
Will There Be Talks Between the US and Iran?
US President Donald Trump has once again threatened Oman, even as Iran states it is working with the Arab Gulf nation on a plan to manage vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Fully reopening this maritime route has been a key US demand. Meanwhile, the 60-day window set for negotiations aimed at a peace agreement between the US and Iran was drawing to a close. There was no news of an extension, and it appeared that the two sides remained as far apart as they were at the outset.
