Andaman and Nicobar Islands have entered the Guinness World Records after successfully unfurling the largest Indian national flag underwater at Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island), a major tourist destination in the Bay of Bengal.
The massive tricolour measured 60 metres in length and 40 metres in width and was displayed underwater as part of a record-setting diving initiative.
Around 200 divers, including personnel from the forest department, marine police, and private diving experts, took part in the achievement. The event was completed around 10 am under coordinated supervision.
Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Admiral (Retd.) Devendra Kumar Joshi, also joined the diving team for the historic attempt. Officials said the initiative was aimed at promoting the islands as a global scuba diving and marine tourism hub while showcasing their rich underwater biodiversity and conservation efforts.
According to the tourism department, the record attempt is part of a broader strategy to attract international tourists, adventure enthusiasts, and promote sustainable tourism practices in the region. Director (Tourism) Vinayak Chamadia stated that the event highlights the crystal-clear waters and unique marine ecosystem of the islands, positioning them as a world-class eco-tourism destination.
The administration is also planning another Guinness World Record attempt on Sunday near the Light House area at Swaraj Dweep jetty, where divers will attempt to create the “tallest human stack underwater” with a minimum height of 10 metres. Officials added that the participation of top administrative leadership underscores the government’s commitment to boosting tourism and enhancing global visibility for the islands.
