Iran’s Araghchi calls for UNSC reform at BRICS, flags global governance crisis

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called for urgent reform of global governance institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, during the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting held in New Delhi.

Speaking on Friday, Araghchi said the world is currently facing “a period of structural instability and a deep crisis of trust,” arguing that existing post-World War II institutions are no longer equipped to handle 21st-century challenges.

He stressed that the current international order has failed to reflect shifting global realities, particularly the growing influence of emerging economies, and said reform was not optional but essential for restoring credibility to multilateralism.

Araghchi also criticised what he described as “multilateralism in name only,” alleging that some global institutions are being used to preserve unilateral dominance rather than ensure equal participation among nations.

According to him, the gap between developed and developing countries has resulted in what he termed “widespread injustice” in the distribution of power, wealth, and development opportunities.

The Iranian minister further said that the UN Security Council must undergo structural reform to ensure fair representation across regions, including Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and called for a more equitable distribution of decision-making power.

He argued that ignoring the interests of developing nations has eroded the legitimacy of global institutions and weakened international cooperation.

Araghchi also linked his remarks to broader concerns about unilateral sanctions, misuse of international law, and erosion of sovereignty in global affairs.

The BRICS meeting in New Delhi brought together foreign ministers from member countries to discuss reforms in global governance and multilateral institutions amid rising geopolitical tensions.
