Success Story: Typically, students who secure top ranks in NEET dream of studying at prestigious medical institutions like AIIMS or JIPMER. However, Abhida Barretto from Goa chose a different path. After an outstanding performance in NEET, she turned down admission offers from AIIMS and JIPMER to join the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune. Having completed her MBBS, she has now been commissioned as a Lieutenant (Medical Officer) in the Indian Army. Her success story serves as an inspiration to thousands of young people.
Outstanding Performance in NEET
Abhida Barretto, a native of the Canacona region in Goa, secured the first rank in the state in NEET 2021. Following this achievement, she had the opportunity to study at prestigious institutions like AIIMS and JIPMER, but she prioritized her dream of becoming an army doctor and chose AFMC, Pune.
Why AFMC?
In an interview, Abhida mentioned that while no one in her family was in the army, seeing an officer in uniform during her childhood sparked a desire to serve the country. During Class 12, her teachers told her about AFMC, an institution that offers the opportunity to serve in the Indian Army alongside becoming a doctor. This aspect inspired her the most.
Excelled During MBBS
While pursuing her MBBS at AFMC, Pune, Abhida excelled not only in academics but also in sports and other activities. At the convocation ceremony, she was honored with the Maj Gen N.D.P. Karani Trophy, awarded to the second-best outgoing student of the Graduate Wing. Additionally, she won gold medals in Anatomy, Physiology, Pediatrics, and Medicine. She achieved distinctions in 13 out of 14 MBBS subjects and secured the highest marks in the first, second, and third years.
Excelled in Sports Too
Abhida distinguished herself not only in academics but also in sports. She represented the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) in athletics and won several sprint and relay competitions. She served as the captain of the girls’ football team and delivered impressive performances in various full and half marathons in Pune.
Became a Medical Officer in the Indian Army
After completing her MBBS, Abhidha Barretto has been commissioned as a Lieutenant (Medical Officer) in the Indian Army. According to reports, she has chosen Jammu for her internship, where she will provide medical services with the Army.
