India vs Brazil: A long-cherished dream of Indian football fans is set to become reality. Brazil, the world’s most successful football team and a five-time World Cup champion, will tour India for the first time. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced on July 30 that an international friendly match between India and Brazil will be played on October 3, 2026, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Kolkata. This match is being hailed as one of the biggest in the history of Indian football. Brazil currently holds the fifth spot in the FIFA world rankings. This will mark the first time since the inception of the FIFA ranking system in 1992 that the Indian team will take the field against such a highly-ranked opponent.
A Historic Occasion for Indian Football
Brazil is counted among the greatest teams in football history. Having won five World Cup titles, the team has inspired players and fans across the globe for decades. Brazil boasts millions of fans in India, and the country is considered to have one of the team’s largest overseas fanbases. AIFF Deputy General Secretary M. Satyanarayan stated that the visit of a legendary team like Brazil would mark a historic chapter in Indian football. Meanwhile, National Team Director and former goalkeeper Subrata Paul described it as a golden opportunity for Indian players to learn and test themselves against one of the world’s best teams.
Reviving Memories of Pelé
This tour by Brazil will also evoke memories of one of Indian football’s most memorable moments. In 1977, the legendary Brazilian footballer Pelé visited India with the New York Cosmos club. An exhibition match played against Mohun Bagan at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens ended in a 2-2 draw. While various Brazilian clubs have visited India in recent years, a tour by the senior national team is considered a rare and significant event.
It is worth noting that India is also scheduled to play two international friendly matches against New Zealand in November. The first match will be held in Auckland on November 12, and the second in Christchurch on November 15. In this context, the months of October and November are going to be very special for Indian football.
