Banks Open on Sunday: The government has taken a significant step in view of the proposed three-day nationwide bank strike scheduled from September 28 to September 30, 2026. According to the Ministry of Finance, all public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) will remain open as usual on Sunday, September 27. The aim is to minimize inconvenience to customers caused by a prolonged disruption in banking services.
Banks to remain open on September 27
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called for a nationwide strike from September 28 to September 30. Prior to this, holidays were scheduled for Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27. Consequently, banking services could have been affected for several consecutive days.
In light of this, the Ministry of Finance has directed public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks to operate normally on Sunday, September 27.
Other services to remain operational alongside bank branches
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has authorized all bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches, and currency chests to remain fully operational on September 27. This means customers will be able to avail themselves of standard banking services even on Sunday.
Bank strike proposed from September 28 to 30
The UFBU has called for a nationwide bank strike on September 28, 29, and 30. A key demand of the unions is the implementation of a five-day work week in banks. However, the government and bank management have appealed to the unions to call off the proposed strike.
The Ministry of Finance has stated that necessary measures are being taken to ensure the smooth functioning of essential services, keeping the banking needs of customers in mind.
