Religion Desk: The festival of Dhanteras is being celebrated today, November 6th. This day marks the beginning of the five-day festival of lights (Deepotsav). It is also known as Dhan-Trayodashi. According to religious beliefs, this festival symbolizes wealth, prosperity, and good health.
It is considered auspicious to purchase gold, silver, brass, copper utensils, and other valuable items on Dhanteras. In many places, there is also a tradition of buying a broom on this day. However, there are certain items that one is advised to avoid purchasing on this occasion, as it is believed that buying them at such an auspicious time is not appropriate. Let us look at five things that should be avoided on Dhanteras.
- Sharp and pointed objects
It is believed that one should avoid purchasing knives, scissors, blades, and other sharp tools on Dhanteras. In religious traditions, such items are considered symbols of cutting, separation, and conflict; therefore, it is not considered appropriate to buy them on an auspicious occasion.
- Iron objects
According to religious beliefs, one should avoid buying iron items on Dhanteras. Iron is associated with Shani Dev (Lord Saturn), and it is believed that purchasing iron on this day does not yield auspicious results. Instead, buying metals like gold, silver, brass, and copper is considered favorable.
- Black-colored items
In Hindu religious traditions, it is customary to avoid wearing or purchasing black-colored items on many auspicious occasions. Similarly, on Dhanteras, it is considered inauspicious to buy black clothing or other black-colored goods. Instead, items in red, yellow, or green are preferred, as these colors are seen as symbols of positivity and prosperity.
- Glassware
It is also advised to avoid purchasing items made of glass on the day of Dhanteras. According to religious beliefs, glass is considered a fragile material that breaks easily. For this reason, it is not considered appropriate to purchase glass items or give them as gifts on this auspicious occasion.
- Ghee and Oil
According to certain religious beliefs, one should avoid purchasing ghee and oil on the day of Dhanteras. It is advised to buy such items either a day before or after the festival. However, ghee and oil hold special significance for lighting lamps during Diwali.
Significance of Religious Beliefs: Traditions regarding purchases on Dhanteras vary across different regions and families. The points mentioned above are based on religious beliefs and traditional customs.
