Holi 2024; Rang Barse Song Story: Everyone eagerly awaits the festival of colours, Holi. Everyone enjoys this colourful festival by applying abir-gulal to each other and dancing and singing on Bollywood songs. But the festival of Holi seems dull without playing a Bollywood song. This song is ‘Rang Barse’ song from Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic film ‘Silsila’. When this song is played on Holi, everyone’s feet start dancing automatically. The magic of this song has remained intact for years. But do you know what is the story behind this classic song? Today in this report we will tell you how the song ‘Rang Barse’ was made?

The song ‘Rang Barse’ is from the film Silsila

Yash Chopra’s brilliant romantic drama film ‘Silsila’ was released in 1981. The very popular song ‘Rang Barse’ from this film was filmed on Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bachchan. This 6 minute 6 second iconic song was sung by Amitabh Bachchan himself and his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan wrote its lyrics. The music composers of this song directed by Yash Chopra were Shiv-Hari. There is an interesting story behind how ‘Rang Barse’ was made, which was told to BBC by film critic Jaiprakash Chouksey.

How was the song ‘Rang Barse’ made?

Film critic Jaiprakash Chouksey had revealed that when there used to be a grand Holi party in RK Studios, all the stars of the film industry used to attend this party. During this, these artists used to present their talent as well. Once, Bollywood’s Shahenshah i.e. Amitabh Bachchan also reached Raj Kapoor’s famous Holi party. At that time, Amitabh’s career graph was going very bad, his 9 films had flopped.

In the party, Raj Kapoor said to Amitabh, “Today show some of your talent and make a splash.” On this, Amitabh sang the song Rang Barse, which he had heard from his father since childhood, in the party and then Yash Chopra was spellbound by Amitabh’s voice. After this, Yash Chopra took Amitabh in ‘Silsila’ and got the lyrics of ‘Rang Barse’ written by the actor’s father Harivansh Rai. After this, Amitabh sang this iconic song in his own voice in the film. The film flopped but this song became immortal.

The song ‘Rang Barse’ is based on Meera’s bhajan

Let us tell you that the song Rang Barse was actually based on a traditional bhajan of Meera. Even though the lyrics were by poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and the song was composed by Shiv-Hari.

But the original bhajan, “Rang barse o Meera, Bhawan mein rang barse / Kun e Meera tero mandir Chinayo, Kun chinayo tero devro / Rang barse o Meera Bhawan mein rang barse.” In the film silsila, this song was changed to fit the script. But the bhajan remained popular among people from generation to generation.
