Supreme Court announces fuel saving steps: VC hearings, carpooling, WFH

The Supreme Court of India has introduced a series of fuel-saving administrative measures aimed at reducing energy consumption and improving operational efficiency amid ongoing concerns over rising fuel usage and costs.

According to the latest directives, all cases listed on miscellaneous hearing days will now be conducted through video conferencing (VC) until further notice. The move is intended to reduce physical travel and streamline court proceedings.

The Supreme Court has also encouraged judges to adopt carpooling arrangements as part of broader efforts to conserve fuel. In addition, registry staff have been permitted to work from home on a rotational basis for up to two days a week, ensuring continuity of essential judicial work while reducing office commuting.

Under the new system, registrars will prepare weekly rosters to manage hybrid attendance, while staff working remotely will remain accessible and may be required to report to office if necessary.

These measures come in response to broader national efforts encouraging institutions to reduce fuel consumption and adopt more sustainable practices amid global energy pressures.
