What happens on the 6th of Muharram?
The sixth date of Muharram is related to Imam Hussain’s son Ali Akbar. On this day, Muslims all over the world, especially those from the Shia community, mourn the death of Imam Hussain’s son Ali Akbar and remember his martyrdom. Nauha and Marsiya are recited in his memory.
On this day, Muslims set up water sabils (drinkers) at various places. Langar (food distribution) is organized and people are given sherbet in the name of Ali Akbar.
According to Maulana Syed Nazish Akbar Kazmi, Imam Hussain’s son Ali Akbar is said to be a look-alike of the Prophet. It is believed that Ali Akbar looked like the Prophet. Maulana said that this was also one of the reasons why Imam Hussain loved Ali Akbar more than anyone else.
Maulana Nazish Akbar said that in 61 Hijri, Ali Akbar was martyred in Karbala, Iraq after being kept hungry and thirsty for three days. He said that when Ali Akbar was martyred, he was only 18 years old. Today is related to Ali Akbar and his sacrifice for Islam is remembered at many places today.
Why is Muharram celebrated?
In 61 Hijri in Karbala, Iraq, Imam Hussain, the grandson of the last prophet Prophet Muhammad, was martyred along with his 71 companions in the field of Karbala after being hungry and thirsty for three days. Muharram is celebrated in memory of this.
Although Imam Hussain was martyred along with his companions and family members on the day of Ashura (the tenth day of the month of Muharram) in the field of Karbala, however, different pursa (mourning) is offered to these martyrs during these ten days all over the world.
Today is the third day of the month of Muharram and this day is associated with Imam Hussain’s childhood friend Habib Ibn Mazahir in different parts of the world. Habib Ibn Mazahir is mentioned in the Majlises (stories) on the third day of Muharram. Imam Hussain had written a letter to Habib and invited him from Kufa (a city in Iraq). After receiving Imam Hussain’s letter, Habib reached Karbala to help him. He is mentioned everywhere on this day.
