From today, schools will open in offline mode only for 10th and 12th classes. All schools will conduct online classes till further orders. While, Supreme Court Questions Delay in Curbs, Warns Delhi Govt Against Lifting Restrictions Even If AQI Drops Below 300.

This announcement has been made by the Delhi government at a time when the pollution level in Delhi remains at dangerous levels for the fifth consecutive day. This announcement was made a few hours after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) implemented stringent pollution control measures for Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) under the fourth phase of the Phased Response Action Plan (GRAP).

The fourth phase of GRAP-4 has come into effect from 8 am on Monday. Let us tell you that Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) had reached the ‘severe’ category on Sunday. The AQI in Delhi was recorded at 441 at 4 pm, which increased to 457 by 7 pm due to adverse weather.

AQI near 1200

Pollution in Delhi has become more deadly on Monday. AQI is more than 700 in most areas of Delhi. The highest AQI of 1185 has been recorded in Mundka and 1040 in Jahangirpuri.

After the implementation of Grap-4, these conditions will have to be followed

  • According to the CMQM order, ‘From today, no trucks will be allowed to enter Delhi except those carrying essential commodities or using clean fuel (LNG/CNG/BS-VI diesel/electric).
  • The Directorate of Education directed the heads of all government and private schools to ensure that offline classes for students up to class 9 and 11 are not held till further orders.

Supreme Court Warns Delhi Govt: No Lifting Restrictions Without Approval!

The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Central Government regarding air pollution in Delhi. A bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih on Monday asked the Central Government, ‘When the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached between 300 and 400, why was there a delay of three days in implementing Stage 3 restrictions? You tell us the guidelines.’

The central government said that now the situation has arisen to implement stage 4 restrictions. On this the court said, ‘Tell us how the Delhi government will implement it. We are making it clear here that you will not go below stage 4 without our permission. Even if the AQI falls below 300.’

GRAP is imposed when AQI crosses 400

It is divided into 4 categories to check the level of air pollution. Standards and measures are fixed for each level. This is called Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Under its 4 categories, the government imposes restrictions and issues measures to reduce pollution.

Stages of Grape

  • Stage I ‘Poor’ (AQI 201-300)
  • Stage II ‘very poor’ (AQI 301-400)
  • Stage III ‘Severe’ (AQI 401-450)
  • Stage IV ‘Severe Plus’ (AQI >450)
