Monsoon Alert: Monsoon picks up pace across the country; flights in Mumbai affected; heavy rain warnings issued for several states, including Delhi and Jharkhand.

Monsoon Alert: Monsoon activity intensified across most parts of the country on Sunday. Heavy rainfall disrupted flight operations in Mumbai, while weather alerts were issued for Delhi, Kerala, Odisha, and Jharkhand. The national capital, Delhi, also received rainfall. Mumbai has borne the brunt of this monsoon; heavy overnight rain forced a suspension of flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport for nearly an hour.

Red Alert for Rain in Mumbai

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintained a ‘Red Alert’ for Mumbai on Sunday, forecasting heavy rainfall in certain areas. Flight disruptions affected numerous services, causing passengers to face average delays of 75 minutes for departures and at least 28 minutes for arrivals. However, operations on the runway returned to normal within an hour as weather conditions improved. Official data indicates that several areas in Mumbai recorded over 200 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, with some locations receiving up to 300 mm.

Rainfall Across Various Parts of Delhi

Moderate rainfall in several parts of Delhi on Sunday brought significant relief from the sultry heat. According to Meteorological Department data, Chhatarpur recorded the highest rainfall at 49 mm by 2:30 PM. This was followed by 35 mm in Gurugram, 18 mm in Mehrauli, 17 mm in Greater Noida, 8 mm in Najafgarh, and 7 mm in Janakpuri. The weather department has forecast generally cloudy skies and moderate rain for the day, with the maximum temperature likely to hover around 36 degrees Celsius.

Yellow Alert for Rain in Jharkhand

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for all 24 districts of Jharkhand from July 6 to July 9, warning of thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and strong winds. Heavy rainfall is forecast for Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Hazaribagh, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, and Ranchi on Monday.

Landslide warning issued for Kerala

Most parts of Kerala also experienced heavy rainfall on Sunday. Following this, ‘Orange’ and ‘Yellow’ alerts have been issued for several areas. The Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for Kannur and Kasaragod for July 6 (Monday), and for Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod for July 7 (Tuesday). The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has advised residents in areas vulnerable to landslides, land subsidence, and flash floods to move to safer locations in accordance with the administration’s instructions.
