E-Challan Scam: If you receive a message on your mobile phone regarding the payment of an e-challan, do not make the mistake of clicking on it without verification. The Transport Department has issued an advisory following reports of cyber fraud involving fake e-challans in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh. Cybercriminals are attempting to obtain banking details, OTPs, and other confidential information by sending messages that mimic official government notices. Officials have urged the public to verify e-challans only through official portals and to avoid clicking on any suspicious links or messages.
Fake links sent via SMS and WhatsApp
According to the Transport Department, cyber fraudsters are sending fake e-challan payment messages via SMS, WhatsApp, and other social media platforms. These messages closely resemble genuine government notices, making it easy for people to fall for the scam. Clicking the link provided in the message redirects the user to a fake website that is an exact replica of the official government portal. Users are then asked to provide confidential information such as vehicle registration numbers, mobile numbers, bank account details, ATM card information, and OTPs.
A single click can drain your bank account
Experts state that as soon as a person enters their banking details or OTP, cyber fraudsters gain access to their bank account. In many instances, the fake links also prompt users to download APK files or mobile applications. Such apps install malware on the mobile device, potentially compromising UPI services, banking apps, and personal data.
Creating mental pressure through intimidation
Fraudsters often use threats—such as legal action, heavy fines, or vehicle seizure—to pressure people into making quick payments. Succumbing to this mental pressure, many individuals click the links without verifying them and fall victim to cyber fraud.
How to stay safe
The Transport Department has urged the public to handle all e-challan inquiries and payments exclusively through the official website. Do not click on links or suspicious messages received from unknown numbers, and avoid sharing OTPs, UPI PINs, or details related to your bank account or card with anyone. If you receive a suspicious e-challan message, report it immediately to the cyber helpline or the nearest police station. The department states that a little vigilance and awareness can protect you from cyber fraud and safeguard your hard-earned money.
