CG Railway AI: The Railways is continuously upgrading its security infrastructure with high-tech solutions to effectively monitor incidents such as theft, assault, brawls, suspicious activities, and other security-related events at railway stations and on trains. As part of this initiative to bolster passenger safety and security, the Railways has rapidly expanded the deployment of state-of-the-art AI-powered CCTV cameras. Within the South East Central Railway (SECR) zone, 145 railway stations and 303 passenger coaches have so far been equipped with AI-based CCTV surveillance systems. According to railway officials, these cameras utilize not only video recording capabilities but also AI-driven video analytics technology.
This technology is capable of detecting unauthorized entry and suspicious activities, automatically identifying individuals falling onto platforms or tracks, and instantly flagging other unusual occurrences. This enables security agencies to receive timely information about incidents, facilitating prompt action. The Railways states that the use of AI cameras has made security arrangements at stations and on trains significantly more effective than before. Round-the-clock monitoring of all activities is being conducted through these cameras, aiding greatly in keeping a watch on theft, snatching incidents, unauthorized entry, the movement of suspicious individuals, and other criminal activities.
Crucial leads obtained in 9,840 incidents between 2023 and June 2026
According to railway data, a total of 9,840 security-related incidents were detected using AI-based CCTV cameras between January 2023 and June 2026. Based on the footage and inputs provided by these cameras, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and relevant agencies obtained crucial leads, enabling timely action and the resolution of numerous cases. Officials state that these cameras have expedited and improved the accuracy of investigations into various incidents.
Rapid expansion of AI camera network across the country
The initiative is not limited to the South East Central Railway zone; the AI-based surveillance system is being expanded across the entire country. Currently, CCTV cameras have been installed at 3,215 railway stations and in 13,409 passenger coaches across the country. The Railways aims to equip an increasing number of stations and trains with this smart surveillance system in the near future to ensure a safer and better travel experience for passengers. The Railways believes that an AI-based CCTV system will further strengthen railway security in the future; leveraging modern technology, this system will play a crucial role not only in crime prevention but also in ensuring a rapid response during emergencies.
