When the BCCI handed the T20 International captaincy of Team India to Shreyas Iyer in place of Suryakumar Yadav, everyone expected to see further improvement in performance. However, the reality on the field was quite the opposite; under Iyer’s captaincy, Team India has lost five of the six matches played so far and has also lost two consecutive series. When Team India lost the fourth match of the T20 series against England, Iyer set an unwanted record: he became the first Indian captain to lose five consecutive T20 matches.
Shreyas Iyer Surpasses Even Dhoni
Shreyas Iyer’s journey since taking over the T20 International captaincy has been fraught with difficulties, and questions are now being raised about his leadership. Iyer has become the first Indian captain under whose leadership the team has lost five consecutive matches. Previously, this unenviable record was held by MS Dhoni; under his captaincy, Team India had lost four consecutive T20 International matches in 2009 and again during the 2014–15 period. The Indian team has played six matches under Iyer’s captaincy so far—one was abandoned, while five resulted in losses. This includes a T20 series loss against Ireland in addition to the series loss against England. Furthermore, Iyer has become the Indian captain to reach the mark of five losses the fastest; for comparison, Team India had previously suffered five losses across 12 matches under Virat Kohli’s captaincy.
Team India Loses Two Consecutive Series Since 2019
With the loss of the T20 series against England, the Indian team has suffered defeats in two consecutive series for the first time in nearly seven years. Prior to this, Team India suffered defeats in two consecutive T20 International series in 2019, losing 2–1 to New Zealand and subsequently 2–0 to Australia at home. Now, the Indian team faces the challenge of winning the final T20 match against England to salvage its pride.
